Adelaide 1.60 v Richmond 2.35

TIP - Margin Adelaide 1-24 @ 3.30

The Crows looked to continue this season the results they produced last year when coasting against the Bombers in round 1 but for whatever reason the Crows fell asleep and allowed the Bomber to kick six of the last seven goals.

That meant Essendon came away with a 12 point victory 99-87 while Adelaide were left scratching their heads about the whole thing. More concentration needed this week against the team that did the same to them in the second half of the grand final last season.

Richmond came out of the blocks ice cold last week allowing Carlton to score the first five goals and in quick fashion too but the champs didn't panic and slowly reeled the Blues in and by half time had reeled them in.

The second half was a tough contest but as so many times last year the Tigers dug deep in the last quarter to take the four points 121-95 in convincing fashiion.

Verdict - It may have been a rude awakening last week for the Crows which may have been a blessing in disguise come the end of the season, home advantage should just see them through.

North Melbourne 3.18 v St Kilda 1.36

TIP Margin St Kilda 1-24 @ 3.50

North Melbourne have started the season as they performed throughout 2017 (poorly) with a loss against one of the other wooden spooner's Gold Coast.

The Kangaroos looked lost in a game that was up for grabs but old and new faces could not find the level of performance needed to get their season off to a good start, more needed in the whole.

St Kilda were made to work hard for their first round victory against the Lions but they stood up to be counted after falling behind in the third quarter in a tight contest to come out on top 107-82.

One thing the Saints will be pleased about was their effort when it mattered in the last quarter, those are the sort of performances in close games they will need if they are to have any chance of making the last eight.

Verdict - The Saints showed grit and a will to win last week which is more than North Melbourne did so preference has to be for them.

Carlton 1.46 v G Coast 2.75 - BEST BET

TIP Margin Carlton 25+ @ 2.40

Carlton and their young squad got off to a flyer against the reigning champions Richmond last week scoring the first five goals in quick fashion but their early dash could not be maintained and the Tigers won an exciting game 121-95.

Carlton showed enough in the game to suggest that they are much improved this year and if they can maintain the level showed for four quarters in stead of three they will be hard to beat when on song.

Gold Coast won their first round match but it was an all out slog against North Melbourne in a tight game that ended 55-39 but the Suns will not care how they earned the four points just the fact they have them.

One of the issues win the Suns has always been the ability to win on their travels and these are the type of games that they will have to be able to take points from if they are to challenge the top eight.

Verdict - The Blues should take all the beating here after comparing both performances last week and they should not only win but win well.

Collingwood 3.06 v GWS Giants 1.38

TIP Margin GWS 25+ @ 2.00  - BEST BET

Collingwood started their first round match against the Hawks brightly enough but soon struggled and by half time the game was all but over as the Pies conceded eight goals in the second quarter.

they have been out of sorts for a few years now and they will have to rectify certain aspects of their game in the coming weeks if they are to have any chance of featuring at the back end of the season.

GWS came out firing in their forist round match against the Bulldogs and quickly dominated showing once again that they will be a major player this season for honours.

The game finished 133-51 and was all but over at half time, Jeremy Cameron had an outstanding game scoring 6.3 while small forward Toby Greene also played his part with 4.0.

Verdict - Only one result here and it's GWS all the way, they have the potential to go all the way this year and as early as round 1 have shown us they are on their way.

Brisbane 3.30 v Melbourne 1.34

TIP Margin Melbourne 24+ @ 2.1

Brisbane were a team last season that showed promise in several games but due to their young squad lacked any match hardiness and quite often fell away after the first half.

In their first round match against St Kilda they looked to have taken a few steps in the right direction but they did once again fade in the last quarter which const them the game.

Melbourne should have had four points in the bag after round 1 but a pulled straight set shot from Max Gawn in the dying seconds was costly and the Cats held on for a 97-94 victory.

Overall the Demons performed well above expectations and if they can shake off the hard luck story of the last round they will come here expecting the victory.

Verdict - Melbourne probably should win but the Lions may keep this close and could get up, Demons to come out on top.

Fremantle 2.40 v Essendon 1.58

TIP Margin Essendon 25+ @ 2.70

The Docker's always looked one step off the pace in their opening round match against Port Adelaide and that reflected in the final score as Fremantle were on the wrong end of an 110-60 point game.

At home we all know that the Dockers are stronger and this type of game they will fee is one that they should be very competitive in.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding the chances of the Bombers this season with many tipping them and a good live chance of lifting the flag but that did not look the case deep into their opening round fixture against the Crows.

Essendon however managed to turn things around with a superb display of all around football in the last quarter to snatch victory form the jaws of defeat scoring six of the last seven goals to take the points with an 99-87 victory.

Verdict - Promising signs last week from a Bombers team that has been talked about in the off season, they have already shown they can come from behind and stay composed under pressure. Should be too good here for the Dockers.

Western Bulldogs 1.61 v West Coast 2.34

TIP Margin West Coast 1-24 @ 4.50

Western Bulldogs struggled last week against the Giants and they knew their fate before half time as the Giants pilled on the points from the off, was that just the class of GWS coming threw or was it more about a poor Bulldogs performance.

Either way they will have to put in a better performance here if they are to take anything out of the game, we will know more after round 2 what they are all about.

West Coast certainly played their part in the game against the Swans but the class of the Swans prevailed in the end with the game finishing 115-86 after a late burst in the final quarter got the Swans home.

The Eagles will come out of the game knowing that they gave one of the better teams a real good go and they will be looking forward to games like this that on paper look slightly easier.

Verdict - Could go either way this one, if the Bulldogs were just really poor last week then the price of the Eagles does look overs.

Sydney 1.40 v Port Adelaide 2.98

TIP Margin Sydney 25+ @ 2.25

The Swans got their campaign off to a good start when they beat the Eagles away 115-86 in a very professional display, they will have expected the points before the game and will be more than happy with their efforts.

Sydney are always a team that are there or there about's and at home they are a hard team to topple in recent years against interstate opposition and this is a record they will want to keep in tact this year.

Port also got off to a solid start this term easily dispatching the Dockers by fifty points 110-60 in a one sided game that they always dominated.

If the Power have any serious ambitions of challenging for honours this season they have to bode well in encounters such as this, on the road against a supposed top four team.

Verdict - Sydney showed enough in the first round to suggest they will be hard to beat both home and away this season so preference is for them to once again pile on the points and win comfortably.

Geelong 1.61 v Hawthorn 2.34

TIP - Margin Hawthorn 1-24 @ 3.75

Probably the game of the round on paper but Geelong were made to work for their win last week against the Demons and in reality were lucky to to come away win the four points from the encounter.

You would forgive them for a slow start to the campaign but they will need to be sharper here as the Hawks may well be a class above their first round opposition!!

Hawthorn made light work of their opening round fixture against the Pies comfortably coming out on top 110-67, a superb all round display once again by Tom Mitchell as he racked up an astonishing 54 disposals in the match.

The Hawks may not be the force they were a few season's ago but they are still one of the best teams in the league and they have already shown that they will once again be right in the mix come finals time.

Verdict - The Cats struggled in round one and were lucky to take the points while the Hawks looked solid so preference is for the latter in what should be a tight affair.
