US Open 2018 - Preview

Brooks Koepka is the reigning champion after winning the 2017 US Open by five shots and he will hope that once again he can be in contention late on Sunday.

The last time Shinnecock Hills played host to the US Open back in 2004 it was South African Retief Goosen who came out on top but it was the final round carnage at the New York tournament in which no player managed to finish under par for the first time since 1963 and the average final-day scored was 78.7 - more than eight shots over par - will live long in the memory.

To have any chance of winning round here players will have to be at the top of their game with the main focus being accurate driving and avoiding the troubles associated with not finding the fairway.

Below we take a look at the favourites for this years tournament and their credentials in a bid to become a major champion.

Dustin Johnson - 9.0

PGA Form - After winning the Fedex St Jude Classic by six shots Dustin moves back to No1 in the world, 11 events played this year for 2 wins 2 seconds and seven top 10's. The only thing he has going against him is the fact that no player has ever won the US Open after winning the week before but records are there to be broken.

Rory Mcllroy - 13.0

PGA Form - One win and three top ten finish for Rory in 2018 on the US tour but he has also gained four top five finishes on the European Tour this season from only four tournaments entered.

Jordan Spieth - 15.0

PGA Form - Not the best start to the year for Jordan with only two third places and four top tens this season.

Justin Thomas - 15.0

PGA Form - Two wins and a second place and six top 10's from 14 events played in 2018 suggests his game is good, five top five finishes overall in 2018.

All four favourites come here with solid form and credentials with Spieth, Mcllroy and Johnson having shown they can handle Augusta.

Jason Day - 17.0

PGA Form - Two wins and a second place and four top 10's for the Aussie this season so expect a big showing from the home grown talent of Day.

Obviously with last weeks win all eyes will be on Dustin but he does have to make a little history if he it to win this, Rory came close in the BMW Championships at The Wentworth Club a few weeks ago so he looks in fine fettle so out of the big five they may well be the ones to concentrate on

Now lets look for some value, a few from The USPGA and a few players from the European tour come into this after having solid seasons with the best options listed below.

Francesco Molinari  - 67.0

Won the BNW Championship a few weeks ago against a really strong field and then once again played some great golf last week in the Italian Open finishing second, solid claims on recent form.

Tommy Fleetwood - 41.0

Three top 10's on the PGA tour this year along with a win and a second place on the European tour this year, Tommy is one of the most consistent golfers around and is always there or thereabouts as suggested by his stats with 14 top 25 finishes from only 17 starts.

Ian Poulter - 101.0

Very consistent this year after having all sorts of injury worries for 18 months but he's back to his best and has won on the PGA tour this season and has three top 10's to his name from 12 starts.

Three more top 10's on the European tour this year from only six starts suggests he is a live outsider, he is not the biggest hitter but he is very solid and finds the fairway.

Brian Harmen - 101.0

Although he is yet to win this season he has seven top 10's to his name on the PGA tour from 16 events suggesting he may well be there or thereabouts at decent odds.

Chesson Hadley - 151.0

Six top 10's on the PGA tour this season, he has been a little out of touch in recent weeks but he has shown this year that he has the potential to mix it up with the big boys.

His record this season speaks for itself, not a big price on offer but you will no doubt get a run for you money.

Francesco Molinari  - 67.0 - E.W - Top 5,10

Finished in the top two in his last two tournaments and they were strong fields too, decent odds he is a steady player and conditions will suit.
