French Open 2018 Preview

Men's Singles

Rafael Nadal (1.45) has dominated this event in recent years winning ten times the last thirteen years so as you would expect he comes into this worthy favourite.

Nadal reclaimed the world number one ranking only last week when winning the Rome Masters for the eighth time beating Alexander Zverev 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 in the final after wins in Barcelona and Monte Carlo in recent weeks.

Any clay tournament you have to factor Nadal in as the likely winner due to his record over the years and with him seemingly in form it would be brave man to look past him.

Although Alexander Zverev (8.00) fell just short against Nadal last week in Rome he comes here with a real live chance, Zverev came into the Rome Masters in fine form after wins in Madrid and Munich along with reaching the last four in Monte Carlo.

He certainly looks the best bet if you were to take Rafa out of the equation due to his efforts recently on clay and if anyone is to topple the Spaniard it will most likely be the German.

Of the others Stan Wawrinka (51.00) in the last three years here has won in 2015, made the top four in 2016 and was a beaten finalist last year.

The Swiss player has fallen to 25th in the world after a loss of form and injury but he is worth a look at the price.

Kyle Edmund (81.00) is one to watch out for, he is no superstar but recent solid form has seen him move inside the top 20 in the rankings for the first time in his career.

The Brit has taken some notable scalps in recent weeks and since he is on the up he is decent odds for e.w punters to possibly make the top four or final.

Women's Singles

After her absence due to a two year drugs ban Maria Sharapova (12.00) is once again moving up the rankings and she has had some success here in the past winning in 2012 and 2014 and has made the final four on five occasions.

She is not the force she once was but a recent semi-finals effort in Rome and a quarter-finals finish in Madrid suggests she is getting back to near her best and can once again go deep into the tournament here.

Simona Halep (6.50) has been to the final twice here back in 2014 and last year but she is one of those players that never quite seems to put in her best efforts when she has a chance of winning a major.

She lost in the final last week in Rome and two quarter-finals defeats in recent weeks in Madrid and Stuttgart suggests she is in good touch.

Kiki Bertens (26.00) reached the semi-final here two years ago and while she doesn't have the best slam record she is one who has proven herself on clay.

A clay tournament win in Charleston and her second place in Madrid in recent weeks suggests she will be one a decent odds to look out for.
